Large 63x49cm Oval Curved Glass Vintage Early 20th Cen Wooden Framed Moustache Man with Bow Tie Photo
A LARGE 63x49CM OVAL CURVED GLASS VINTAGE FRAMED COLOUR PHOTO OF A MAN WITH LARGE MOUSTACHE IN SUIT AND BOWTIE. THE GLASS IS CURVED WHICH IS NORMALLY A GOOD SIGN OF A FRAMES AGE SINCE CURVED GLASS IS MORE EXSPENSIVE TO MAKE AND BY FAR THE MAJORITY OF MODERN FRAMES USE FLAT GLASS.
THE FRAME APPEARS TO BE MADE FROM WOOD WITH A PLASTER OVERLAY PLEASE SEE PHOTO. Plaster or composition frames became popular in the early 1800s or early 19th century. Therefore, if a frame is made of plaster rather than only carved wood, then it is probably not older than the 19th century, even if its design seems to belong to an earlier period.
EVENLY SPACED AROUND THE FRAME ARE FOUR 3D RAISED RELIEF FLOWER SCROLL ARTWORK. THIS WAS CHARACTERISTIC OF ANTIQUE FRAMES WHICH OFTEN HAD ELABORATE DECORATIONS AROUND THE FRAME. Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries the frames had decorative motifswhich included arabesques, scrollwork, stylized flowers and foliage. Although there are modern antique looking reproductions today's modern picture frames tend to be minimalistic, lacking details or flourishes that could detract from the framed painting or photograph.
THE BEST INDICATION OF THE VINTAGE AGE OF THIS FRAMED AND PHOTO COMES FROM THE OLD BROWN PAPER COVERING THE BACK. Clearly a heavy-duty paper that was often used for shipping, wrapping, and packaging. THIS TOGETHER WITH SOME STAINS AND OTHER AGE RELATED MARKS ON THE BACK WITH THE LOOKS AND TYPE OF CLOTHES WORN BY THE MAN IN THE COLOUR (COLOUR PHOTOS WAS ALREADY INVENTED IN 1861) PHOTO (MOUSTACHE, BOW TIE, SUIT) CLEARLY GIVE A VINTAGE EARLY 1920S TWENTIETH CENTURY AGE FOR THIS FRAME.
