PROCESSION OF BENIN OBA WITH HIS QUEEN

The Benin Bronzes are a group of more than a thousand commemorative metal plaques and sculptures that decorated the royal palace of the Benin Kingdom in southern Nigeria.ᅡᅠ Today, it is clear that the bronzes were made in Benin from an indigenous culture.ᅡᅠ

The metal pieces were made using lost-wax casting and are considered among the best sculptures made using this molding which is necessarily destroyed as part of the casting process.

This statue is from a later period in the Benin Kingdom - note the glasses the "Oba" is wearing - an influence presumably of the missionaries.

The procession is being led by the Flute Player - note his cross - possibly another example of the colonisation influence on the Benin people.

ᅡᅠ

This is a truly remarkable example of Benin sculpture.ᅡᅠ It weighs 7,7 kilos.ᅡᅠ It measures 43cms x 47cms x 20cms
