A superb antique piece, this 14 carat yellow gold cameo (estimated to be during the Victorian period, c1880-1900) has mounting designed to be worn as a brooch or pendant. The large cameo is carved from a Sardonyx shell (Cassis madagascariensis shell), in a classical style with mythological theme of Pandora holding her pithos (storage jar) with a typical Greek structure in the background. The minute hand-carved detail of this piece is outstanding, and the mounting is constructed expertly. Tested and verified as 14 carat yellow gold, and partial maker marks are visible on the pin.
Some information on the Greek Mythology of Pandora: Zeus gave Pandora a storage jar (pithos) as a wedding gift which she opened, releasing the swarm of evil spirits trapped within. These would forever after plague mankind, symbolising the power that the woman holds over man. Dimensions: the piece measures 5,4 cm x 4 cm.
