Large Antique 'Derby - C1790' Porcelain Jug
This large, very early, hand-painted porcelain floral 'Derby' jug from the late1700's, was made at the early Nottingham Road works in London and is in amazing condition for its age. The jug has a large round belly, with a wide ribbed, slightly tapering neck and stands on a low round pedestal base. It has been beautifully painted with a large colourful bunch of flowers on one side, and a slightly smaller bunch on the other, with two small bunches on the ribbed neck. Around the centre shoulder is a dark blue painted panel, with gilt borders, and pretty, fine gilt scrolls, florets and pendants. Along the rim edge is a narrower similar blue panel with gilt borders, and the handle has some lovely gilt work. There is a monogram below the spout inscribed in gold 'REF'. On the base, is a painted early Derby mark in puce, with the crown, crossed batons and a cursive 'D'. This mark was used between 1782 and 1800. The jug stands 23cm high, has a belly diameter of 16cm, and a spout to handle measurement of 20,3cm, with a weight of 1400g. Other than some minor gilding loss to the rim and handle, it is in excellent condition and hard to believe it's over two hundred years old.
Note: An identical Derby jug sold ten years ago on the Bonham's Auction in London on the 2/11/2011 for £562 (pounds)
