Offered for sale is a fine large Rand Ceramics studio ceramic bowl in a particularly rare freeform shape with thick corded side handles/lugs. The bowl is hand thrown on a potters wheel and manipulated with the left and right extremities of the rim folded in wards to create a sinuous undulating profile complemented with two thick side handles applied by hand . The bowl has a beautiful deep moss green /emerald green transmutation glaze with flashes of white oxide and blue in a slightly irridescent metallic finish. The base of the bowl is glazed in an opaque white with an impressed numerical code probably the form/shape number. Rand Ceramics items are increasingly collectible and form a vibrant contrast to Linn Ware and Globe Potteries ceramics with which they were exactly contemporary. Rand Ceramics was based in Johannesburg and owned by a certain HB Hammerschlag ; the company was founded in the 1930's and closed in 1955. Very little archival information exists regarding the designers and glaze chemists ; what is certain is the fine quality of the pieces and sophisticated glaze techniques employed. The size is 34cm width including the 2 hooped handles; 30cm width excluding the handles; height 8cm. The condition is very good.
