We are pleased to offer this lovely Toby Jug manufactured by Burlington Ware/ Shaw and Sons of Staffordshire England circa 1930's. This company was in existence from 1931 to 1962. This Toby jug features a cheery plump gentleman wearing a black tricorn with one of the corners forming the pouring spout of the pitcher. He has his whiskey jug in one hand and long stemmed smoking pipe in the other and a smile on his face - what more could any man want? This is a true Toby jug as it is a full bodied figure and is different from a character jug which only shows the head and shoulders. The original toby jug or mug was in the form of a jolly stout man wearing a cocked hat that was named after Toby Fillpot, a drunken character in the song "Little Brown Jug" that was popular in England and America in the 1700's. This hand painted Burlington Ware Toby Jug stands 23.5 cm tall. It is a larger size than many that were produced. The mark is as shown, but without the character's name ¿ BOOZER. Later production had the name printed as well an an impressed country of origin, which this one does not have. The artist did not paint all the face, and has left some of the flesh tones off with just the white underglaze showing. It is in good condition with no nicks, chips or but has crazing all over, which is normal for these larger jugs from Burlington. One of the crazing bits is developing into a crack at the top, as shown in the photographs above and below. However, this is an extremely attractive piece in vibrant colours, and worthy of acquisition. Just a lovely mid-20th Century Staffordshire Toby Jug that you are sure to want to add to your collection. Will be sent via Post Office Ordinary parcel post counter to counter, and the cost of postage and packaging will be R30.00. |
