LARGE GROUP OF ASSORTED 1960S R&L KELLOGS CEREAL PLASTIC TOYS INCLUDES 13 RARE CRATER CRITTERS AMONGST OTHERS

A LARGE GROUP OF AROUND 70 RARE 1960S R&L CEREAL PLASTIC TOYS INCLUDING SOME 13 RARE CRATER CRITTERS AND OTHER FUNNY CREATURES LIKE NEPTUNES SWINGING SEEBED SERENADERS.

These little plastic characters, between 2-4cm tall, were cereal premiums (and sometimes Cracker Jack prizes) made in the late 1960s and 1970s by an Australian company called R & L. The tiny toys were found in packages of Kellogg's cereal worldwide, although there were some country exclusives.

There were many different sets (like Crater Critters and Funnie Fringes) of odd and imaginative characters produced by R & L, often with spacey, alien themes, and each with individual names. Fanatical collectors strive to get them all, sometimes in every color combination possible.

THE CRATER CRITTERS, are some of my favorites that you will find in this batch. The original cereal box promotion read: "Here are the cutest creatures you have ever collected -- Kellogg's 'Crater Critters." Normally they live way down in the deepest craters on a far off planet. They are shy little people, that's why we hardly ever see them." There were 8 Crater Critters: Kingly Critter, Clever Critter (1 in this batch), Crawly Critter (4 in this batch), Curly Critter (3 in this batch), Cranky Critter, Creepy Critter (1 in this batch), Kindly Critter and Kooky Critter (4 in this batch).

NEPTUNES BAND OF SEABED SERENADERS are also very popular. Some includes in this batch are King Neptune, Harry Harp, Fab Crab , Plonky Piano , Saxy Salmon, Frantic Fanny Fantail and Tom-Tom Turtle.

NOTE I HAVE VARIOUS OTHER VINTAGE PLASTIC TOYS FROM THE 1960S ON AUCTION THIS WEEK. FROM VINTAGE BOARD GAMES AND VINTAGE MODEL KITS.

COLLECTING CEREAL BOX PLASTIC TOYS
R&L COMPANY (1954-1977)

From the 1960's till the 1980's, Australian plastics manufacturing company Rosenhain & Lipmann (R&L) brought millions of children around the world unbounded joy in a small cellophane bag. Most less than 5cm tall, these brightly-coloured plastic premiums incited a collecting fervour amongst the younger Kellogg's Cornflakes customers like nothing seen before in cereal food marketing.. And despite the fact that millions were produced & exported across the globe, very few have survived the rigours of their toy-box existence to make it to the 21st Century. This unusual marriage of intense initial appeal & high mortality has resulted in their keen desirability today.
By the end of the twentieth century the plastic toys in cereal boxes was no more. Although only one child choked to death on a plastic toy it became too exspensive to put these toys into cereal boxes. Some countries still produce plastic toys but countries like the UK and USA no more.

In the past, most people collected stamps, coins and cards, but the love of cereal toys has now endured for more than 50 years.
