Offered for sale is an exceptional Kalahari studio ceramic freeform platter with a bold abstract motif centering on an eye catching red elliptical target motif enclosed by a sophisticated textured and granular glaze border in charcoal and a radiating craquelure pattern of black on white . The platter is made from a red bodied clay glazed in a crisp arctic white base colour. The shape is a triangulated freeform palette or boomerang slightly convex when resting flat on a table and supported by three small stub feet. The platter is signed on the reverse with the studio name. Kalahari ceramics were hand made and designed by a super talented husband and wife team Aleksanders and Elma Klopkanov expatriate Latvians who emigrated to South Africa in the 1940's and settled in the Cape working from a studio in Constantia Hoek. Their ceramic art is keenly collected and increasingly hard to find ; they are widely regarded as amongst the most original and finest designers of Midcentury ceramics in South Africa.
