Rare & Early Victorian 'Thomas TILL Pottery' Pitcher/Jug

This fabulous, rare, antique pitcher or large jug from the mid 1800's, is beautifully made and in excellent condition. It was produced in Burslem, England by 'Thomas Till' who was an earthenware manufacturer at the 'Stych Pottery' factory. This piece is impressed with 'TILL' on the base which is one of his very early original pieces as the mark changed around 1851 to 'Till & SON', when his son joined him. They went on to exhibit at the 1855 Paris Exhibition where they received a certificate of merit. The jug is a lovely tall shape with a stepped handle, with what looks like 'Baccus's' face, in relief at the base. It features two, one on each side, large hand painted colourful birds on a branch with leaves against a white background. The spout portion, sections of the handle and round foot of the jug are painted a lovely pink, with a black and white Greek 'meandros' pattern going through the middle of the top pink portion. Considering this wonderful piece's age, it's in amazing condition even without wear to the gilt edges. The base is impressed 'TILL' and '28', with a painted number in red '2056' and the letter 'D' in black underglaze. This pitcher measures 15cm at its widest, stands 23cm high and weighs 750g.
