Large Royal Doulton 'Lord Nelson - Trafalgar' Jug (1905)
This impressive, scarce, large, antique Royal Doulton stoneware jug from the early 1900's, was made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Lord Nelson in 1805. It has a lovely shape, with a thick brown rope twist handle, along with raised brown rope borders against a light and dark blue, mottled green glazed background. The jug features, in relief, a portrait of Nelson in the centre with the words 'LORD NELSON, BORN-1758. DIED-1805' below, surrounded by his ships at the battle of Trafalgar on each side, and around the top, a banner with the words 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY'. The base is impressed with the early 'Royal Doulton' backstamp along with the pattern number 'X6421', the initials 'ha' and a two-letter signature. This wonderful piece is in excellent condition, and stands 20,5cm high, measures 15cm at its widest and weighs 1,1kg.
