Large Stoneware Ashtray

An unusual item. I've never seen another like it. Made at Kolonyama Pottery in Lesotho, this beauty is of an era, decorated in the Anglo-Chinese tradition popularised in the UK mid-twentieth century. The glazing indicates that it was likely reduction-fired. This kind of pottery is simply not being produced in any significant way anywhere anymore, and is a delight to the lovers of yesteryear's studio ceramics.

This piece measures 26cm in diameter. Ordinary to the untrained eye. A story in clay to those who know. A lovely thing!
