TOP GREEN GISA CERTIFIED ELBAITE TOURMALINE (AKA BRAZILIAN EMERALD) 6.08CT GEMSTONE NATURAL AND UNTREATED WITH OVAL CUT
A BEAUTIFUL 6.08 CARAT (1,21G MULTIPLY BY 5 TO GET CARATS) TOP GREEN TOURMALINE GEMSTONE FROM MOZAMBIQUE WITH AN OVAL CUT. DEPENDING ON THE LIGHT ANGLE IT DAZZLES FROM A DARK GREEN TO LIGHT GREEN TO BLUE GREEN WITH SHADES IN BETWEEN. THIS TOURMALINES COMES WITH A GISA CERTIFICATE. THIS IS THE LARGEST AND ONE OF ONLY A FEW TOURMALINE GEMSTONES LEFT IN THIS COLLECTION.
THIS PARTICULAR STONE WAS BOUGHT IN 2011 FROM AN EBAY SELLER IN BANGKOK THAILAND WITH THE COUNTRY OF ORIGEN WAS INDICATED AS MOZAMBIQUE. IT HAS A VVS (EYE CLEAR) CLARITY WHICH MEANS IT IS HAS NO INCLUSIONS THAT CAN BE SEEN WITH THE NAKED EYE WHICH IT APPEARS TO BE. IT WAS ALSO SOLD AS A NATURAL UNTREATED TOURMALINE GEMSTONE.
TOURMALINE IS THE MOST COLORFUL MINERAL KNOWN, OCCURRING IN ALMOST EVERY COLOR OF THE RAINBOW. In fact Tourmaline is also known as the rainbow gemstone and has a legend that states that it passed through the rainbow on its way to earth, and thats what gives it all its colors. MOST COLOURS OF TOURMALINE ARE RARE THOUGH SINCE SCHORL OR BLACK TOURMALINE MAKES UP ABOUT 90% OF ALL TOURMALINE. Up until the 1800s, the Tourmaline was not recognized as its own stone. Instead, it was often categorized with other stones such as emeralds. Deep green gem tourmalines mined in Brazil are still referred to by some as Brazilian emeralds, though it is known that they are tourmalines.
THIS TOURMALINE GEMSTONE HAS A SUPPLIED GISA (GEMMOLOGY INSTITUTE OF SOUTHERN AFRICA) CERTIFICATE. THIS COMPANY COULD NOT BE CONTACTED BY CONTACT DETAILS SUPPLIED ON THE BACK. THERE IS NO WEBSITE TO CHECK PAST REPORTS THAT I COULD FIND. I DO NOT KNOW IF STILL IN EXISTENCE. TO THEIR CREDIT THOUGH I HAVE SEEN CERTIFICATES BY THEM THAT I COULD INDEPENDENTLY VERIFY AS CORRECT.
MY PERSONAL CONCLUSION REGARDING THIS GEMSTONE: NONE OF THE PRELIMERY TESTS I COULD PERFORM (SCRATCH TEST; UV TEST; THERMAL TEST) CAN CONFIRM THIS GEMSTONES NATURE AND PROPERTIES. IT DID TEST IN RANGE (LEVEL 4) OF TOURMALINE IN THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY TEST. SINCE TOURMALINE IS RELATIVE ABUNDANT THERE IS LITTLE INCENTIVE TO MAKE SYNTHETIC TOURMALINE. Tourmalines are extremely hard gemstones and cannot be scratched easily. Our gemstone has very little if any scratches on it. Tourmalines are rarely free form inclusions. Our stone has a VVS clarity and is eye clear of inclusions although it might show inclusions under microscope. MY CONCLUSION: IT IS MOST PROPABLY A NATURAL TOURMALINE GEMSTONE
SIZE: 12.0mm x 10.3mm x 7.2mm
DISCLAIMER: I AM NO GEMSTONE EXPERT AND NONE OF THE PRELIMERY TESTS I COULD PERFORM (SCRATCH TEST; UV TEST; THERMAL TEST) CAN CONFIRM THIS GEMSTONES NATURE AND PROPERTIES. THIS GEMSTONES BELONGED TO A FAMILY MEMBER THAT HAS PASSED AWAY. HE COLLECTED GEMSTONES DURING THE EARLY TWENTY FIRST CENTURY MANY WERE BOUGHT ON EBAY AND OTHERS BY TRAVELLING TO OTHER COUNTRIES. ADVANCED INTRUMENTS ARE NEEDED TO DISTINGUISH ONE GEMSTONE FROM ANOTHER AND TO CONFIRM IF IT IS NATURAL OR LAB MADE.
TOURMALINE: Tourmaline is not a single mineral. In fact, it is a group of minerals with inter-related physical and chemical properties. Tourmaline is a complex boron silicate mineral composed of aluminum, iron, magnesium, lithium, and potassium. Each tourmaline stone has the same crystal structure. Yet, the elements inside it may be different. Tourmalines measure 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness. This means that it is quite hard and resistant to scratches. Brazil has been the world's leading source of tourmaline for nearly 500 years. In the 1500s Portuguese explorers obtained green and blue tourmaline from indigenous people. They thought that these colorful stones were emeralds and sapphires and sent them back to Portugal. Today, discoveries of tourmaline of various kinds have been made in African countries like Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania and Zambia. Tourmaline comes in many color-specific varieties, including albaite (green), indicolite (blue), rubellite (red), paraiba (neon blue), watermelon (pink surrounded by green), bi-colored (two colors in one crystal), and multi-colored (three or more colors in one crystal).
