Large Victorian Gold 'Goddess of Dawn' Cameo Brooch
This stunning, large, antique, gold and enamelled cameo brooch, from the mid to late 1800's is by far, the most impressive cameo brooch I've ever seen, and it comes complete with its original hinged case. It features a fabulous, large shell cameo, intricately hand-carved in relief with superb detail, depicting a left facing profile of 'Eos', the beautiful Greek 'Goddess of Dawn' (Aurora in Roman). Here she is portrayed wearing her rose wreath in her hair with sun rays around her head, symbolizing the beginning of a new day and a dove, holding a cornucopia of fruit with his wings outstretched. The cameo is mounted in a magnificent, 9ct solid gold frame with a blue enamelled, rope like border with four hand-engraved gold scrolls evenly spaced. The brooch was made by 'Thomas West', a Victorian goldsmith and jeweller trading between the 1840's and the 1860's, from 18 Ludgate Street in London, England and other than a tiny piece of enamel missing from the frame, it's in great condition with a secure pin and comes with its original leatherette hinged case, stamped on the inside silk, 'T. WEST Goldsmith, 18 Ludgate Street, near St Pauls'. The brooch measures 7cm x 6,5cm and weighs 37g.
This wonderful piece comes with a detailed valuation, with a replacement of R93 000, a copy of which is listed in the photographs. (The valuation was done by a very reputable Gemmologist but doesnt take antiquity and rarity into consideration).
