For the benefit of Teddy Bear Clinic for Abused Children

Lassie
Lassie the Puppy was made by Jade Perryman and successfully summited Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, the highest point in Africa!
Lassie was the glamorous “lady” of the group wearing designer Uggs and a leopard-print dress even in the bitter cold! She’s looking forward to moving in with a new family but must make clear that she will bring her own tent and cell phone with her as she needs to be in contact with “her people” at all times.

In honour of Nelson Mandela’s achievements, dedication and heart melting passion for a country that pushes boundaries in sport, culture and geographical diversification, The South African Gold Coin Exchange sent a team of equally passionate individuals on a 1st of its kind adventure in his honour!

On the 20th of October this year, our 11 representatives began the task of hauling a uniquely constructed coin press up to the peak of the highest point in Africa, with the aim of setting a record for the highest altitude at which a coin has ever been minted.

Yes, this was no normal climb as Mandela is no ordinary hero.

And the team achieved great results with all eleven members summiting and each having the strength and will to mint their medallion.

Some say that our success can be attributed to the teams’

constant support and reassurance from a littler team who mirrored their every step along the way, trudging through water logged rain forests, wobbling along the icy crater rim and finally sharing in the celebration at the rooftop of Africa, Uhuru Peak.

This small-in-height-big-in-heart-team are none other than the trusty Bears Team who adventured to the top of Kilimanjaro with the SAGCE climbers in order to look down across Africa and return with wondrous stories to tell their new families as they try to raise funds for a very worthy cause.

So on Monday the 10th of October, our team of very adventurous albeit nervous staff from The South African Gold Coin Exchange made their way down to the Build-A-Bear Workshop® in Sandton City to make a bear that was to be their companion and confidante while on the treacherous slopes of Kilimanjaro. These were not to be ordinary bears; in fact, they were given personalities and goals of their own.

And now, upon their return, they are auctioned off to new homes, with the proceeds going to their very favourite NPO, The Teddy Bear Clinic!

Teddy Bear Clinic for Abused Children was established in 1996 in response to the dire need for forensic medical assessments of abused children. Now 25 years later, The Teddy Bear Clinic is a fully-fledged NGO serving the children across Gauteng, facilitating their healing and working arduously with the police and the courts to put abusers behind bars, where they can no longer prey on our most vulnerable community. Join our bears and stand up against the abuse perpetuated against our nation’s children. Support the work of The Teddy Bear Clinic as they work tirelessly in providing healing and justice.
