Late 1780 - Early 1800's German Pewter Plate

Pewter is one of the earliest known metals used for basic utensils and remnants of early plates and associated objects have been found dating back to the Roman days. Indeed, it was due to the prolific deposits of tin found in Cornwall, England, which enticed the Romans to trade with that country - that is, before they decided to conquer it! Antique pewter is basically a mixture of around 90% tin and 10% lead.  This produced a superb, easily worked metal which, when new, had the appearance of silver. This fact was not lost on the early pewterers and early pewter shows 'hall marks' similar to that found on silver. Over a number of years, pewter attains a soft, warm gray coloration. Pewter became the predominant metal for most household objects, and, between 1640 and 1840, there were thousands of individuals or small companies in both Britain and Europe.
In Germany, during the 14th and 15th Century, marks showing quality were added to the finished pewter by certified examiners. Guilds were formed to control the quality and the 'Tudor rose' and the 'Rose and crown' , stamps introduced in the 16th Century, were used throughout England and Europe. Around the beginning of the 18th century, the, now recognized 'Angel' stamp was introduced and used mainly in the north of France, Germany and North Europe. The 'angel' depicts the ore angel Michael, usually portrayed with a balance in one hand and a sword in the other, a symbol of justice.
The platter is German, showing the makers initials as 'I S', but, I cannot identify the maker. It has excellent, clear stamps of both the 'Rose and Crown' as well as the'Angel stamp. It is in good condition, slightly pitted on the front and has the initials 'PM' on the rim.

The platter measures 24cm in diameter and weighs 545 grams.
The surface, patina, is a soft, warm, gray color
