Late Victorian Christening Gown

A superb, Late Victorian Christening Gown, dated around 1880-1890
Christening gown - late 1800's
Condition - excellent
Size - to fit newborn baby
Length - 112 cm (44")
Fabric - fine white cotton
Gown assembled by machine, using only straight stitches. Finishings are hand-worked.
High yoke (lined) is decorated in the front with horizontal Swiss trim insertions and slightly gathered Swiss trim edging at base of yoke. Back yoke is also lined. Drawstring closure at neck and single button at base of yoke.
Sleeves are set in and edged with gathered Swiss trim.
Skirt is attached to yokes using traditional gauging techniques. Skirt front has a 53 cm (20 3/4") wide panel, heavily decorated with horizontal 3 mm (1/8") tucks and vertical Swiss trim insertions. The robing on either sie of the decorative panel is Swiss trim edging.
The skirt back is plain.
The bottom of the skirt has a gathered 18 cm (7") wide Swiss trim edging frill attached and 3 x 6 mm (1/4") wide horizontal tucks.
