Walked from family to family following an amnesia caused by the Great War, Gaston, who had become rich in spite of himself thanks to his arrears of pension, rediscovered in stages eighteen years later at the Renauds moments of his former life. On this canvas which is not without debts vis-à-vis Pirandello and Giraudoux, Jean Anouilh composes a strong piece around the themes of memory, the past, bourgeois society, nostalgia for purity and childhood, themes that settle forever on the horizon of the work. 1937 thus turns out to be a crucial date in his career.
