Lead Horse Head – Medieval? Ref.ME/2

This lead ‘Horse’ head really fascinates me.  I believe it dates back to Medieval times (it was uncovered by metal detecting) and could well be an even earlier date.
This lead ‘Horse’ head really fascinates me.  I believe it dates back to Medieval times (it was uncovered by metal detecting) and could well be an even earlier date.Of course, it may have been a child’s toy from the 17th or 18th Century as well.  I have had no luck in tracing its origin or age.  Personally, I don’t think this was a toy as there is no indication that it was broken off a horse’s body.  There are traces of what looks like copper around the neck and the top of the head.  It may have been an attachment to horse tack or just some amulet.
Your guess is as good as mine.
The head is just 24mm in height and 12mm in width. It has withstood the ravages of time fairly well, although you will see there are a number of small pit-marks. The detail of the harness still remains.
