The success of "The Sidewinder" surprised everybody, above all Lee Morgan himself, who suddenly saw himself become a pop star. This had a profound impact on his career development as both Morgan and Blue Note label boss Alfred Lion sought to repeat the success.
Morgan's foray into the avant garde Search for the New Land was shelved, and instead Andrew Hill was hired to write a variation on "The Sidewinder" - "The Rumproller".
The resulting album is close to being a replica of the successful Sidewinder - a similarly sneaky combination of hard bop and boogaloo. The problem is that it's so much more of the same that the album never really manages to create an impact.
It also works the other way round: those who heard The Rumproller first tend to find The Sidewinder underwhelming. Unfortunately, Morgan would stick to the formula for several additional albums, and it was only in the late 1960s, briefly before his death, that he began to gain more profile again.- Rate Your Music review
