2014 large format hardcover with 247 pages in very good condition.
The story of the market gardeners of Tin Town / Springfield Flats is one of tragedy, small triumphs and indiscriminate removals. They were "free Indians" who tried to carve a living for themselves and their families by growing and selling vegetables along the banks Umgeni River (think of the Makro Springfield area) - an area rich in alluvial soil.
The municipality leased approximately 5 acres of land to each family for growing their vegetables and building their homes. There was no electricity, running water or sanitation.
The community was largely poor and lived in shacks, huts and makeshift wood and iron buildings. They were industrious and helped grow the economy of Durban. They also helped to build schools, temples and mosques. Many teachers, doctors, lawyers and engineers went to university with money their parents made as market gardeners.
