Levson was born in Raguva in Lithuania and moved to South Africa in 1902, where he established himself as a renowned portrait photographer, depicting Johannesburg's elite. After the Second World War, he travelled through South Africa by motorcar and captured the changing social conditions of the time. His photographs documented the origins of the migrant labour system and the growing urbanisation that was occurring in the country. Levson died in Malta in 1968.
