A reassessment of the many facets of Leonardo's genius after the rediscovery of two of his notebooks, having been officially lost since 1830, in the Biblioteca Nacional, Madrid, in 1965. The first chapter, "The Painter", concerns Leonardo's thoughts about painting, which he considered as "really science and the legitimate daughter of nature". The second chapter, "The Sculptor", relates the extraordinary history of Leonardo's abortive attempt to construct an enormous bronze statue. The third chapter, "The Teacher", is a discussion of Leonardo's notes, observations, criticisms and reflections on art.
