The Romaine Red Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is an easy-growing heirloom and is native to the Mediterranean and Middle East where it was considered a weed at some stage. This cold and heat-resistant lettuce variety is documented as one of the oldest lettuce cultivars. It starts as green and changes to a bronze, purple-red hue colour when it reaches maturity. The spoon-shaped leaves have dark edges, and its thin firm central rib is lighter in colour. The taste is juicy and slightly bitter with a crispy texture. The baby leaves have a milder neutral taste. If you like to add a little colour to your salad, Romaine Red Lettuce will do the job.
