Promotional ashtrays were commissioned by various companies, organisations and institutes from almost all of the pottery houses in South Africa, but only Continental China prevailed from 1985 onwards along with Crescent but the latter closed in 1992.

Continental China operated out of Kuils Rivier, Cape Town. The significance of Continental China is that they bought out Grahamstown Potteries and from 1967 continued to make and sell Grahamstown Pottery marked wares until 1985. (Source: Gers, Scorched Earth).
