Height in inches: 18-30"; USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 3-9Spread: 18-24"Germination: 1 monthSoil Temp. for Germination: 60-70FSowing: Spring; Barely cover 1/16" Requirements: Likes full sun to light shade in almost any well-drained soil. If planted in rich soils these flowers will grow extra tall and may need to be staked. These are very drought-resistant flowers once established. Blazing Star/Gayfeather are easy to grow perennials once established. They produce dense tufts of narrow, grass-like basal leaves followed by a tall spike-like purple to lavender flowers. The individual flowers have very fluffy strands which looks like they're having a "bad hair day". While the flower spikes of most plants start blooming from the bottom of the spike up, Gayfeather flowers start blooming at the top and bloom progressively down the spike. Because Gayfeathers are one of the best of the butterfly-attracting plants, these would be well recieved in a garden along with other butterfly attractors like Asclepias, and Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea). Try Rudbeckia's (R. hirta) to add a flare of yellow and black color to these lavender shaded flowers.
