Offered for sale is a collectible retro 1970's vintage 3 tile ceramic panel made by the company Liebermann Potteries which at the time was based in Kramerville Johannesburg subsequently relocating to Wynberg .The panel is decorated with a nativity scene in a striking modern interpretation typical of the 1970's, with a Madonna and naked Christ Child with a cat curled up at her feet. . The tiles are transfer printed/silkscreened with hand painted finishing in an earth toned palette of ochre, tan, olive green, cream and dark mahogany brown. The tiles are mounted on a masonite /compressed wood block painted black.
Liebermann Pottery was founded by a husband and wife team Sammy and Mary Liebermann in 1955 and is still extant, a family owned business . In its heyday the company employed over 90 staff and exported ceramics to Europe and the USA. The decorative mural tile division of the company was managed by Mary Liebermann and accounted for around 30% of their sales revenue. Mary Liebermann utilized a number of designers producing a wide range of ceramic tile designs for domestic and commercial clients. She was closely assisted by Michel Dangereaux who previously worked in Vallauris France at Picasso's ceramic studio.
