Description: Liebermann Pottery Hand-Signed Mid-Century Turquoise Glaze Ashtrays Matching Pair Mid-Century Modern / Circa 1960s
BRAND NOTICE: Selling online nationwide under our official brand name. Inventory is updated daily and stock availability depends entirely on current store inventory across platforms.
A spectacular and highly collectible pair of mid-century South African design artifacts, these authentic hand-thrown studio ashtrays stand as a beautiful testament to the post-war ceramic movement.
Masterfully created at the historic Liebermann Pottery workshops in Johannesburg, the heavy-gauge, thick-rimmed circular architecture features wide, hand-pressed resting rests optimized for cigars or pipes. The vessels are coated in Liebermanns highly coveted, elusive running turquoise glazea deep, vibrant teal pool that beautifully transitions into smoky sea-green currents inside the basin, punctuated by organic iron-brown bleeding that hugs the rolled rims. The physical documentation provides absolute ironclad proof of provenance. The unglazed terracotta base footprint of one vessel features the sharply hand-incised script signature reading "Liebermann," carved directly into the damp clay before its initial kiln run, while the matching companion bowl features a clean, un-signed base ring showing the identical clay swirl and glaze template. Entirely free from modern cracks or hairline fractures, this gorgeous matching pair is an elite, functional archive find for a mid-century modern design purist or an avid studio pottery collector.
Original Intended Use: Premium artisan cigar, pipe, or cigarette studio ashtrays. Alternate suggested use: Exquisite catch-all vanity dishes for jewellery, architectural soap dishes, or stylized trinket bowls to inject rich mid-century colour into a curated interior.
Did You Know?
Sammy Liebermann fled Europe during World War II and brought advanced European studio potting techniques to South Africa, establishing his iconic pottery in 1956. While his utilitarian dinnerware focused heavily on earthy ochres, his rare turquoise glaze runs utilized specialized copper carbonates fired under precise kiln reduction cycles. This caused the copper to fuse into a brilliant, glossy sea-teal sheen that perfectly emulated trending mid-century Scandinavian art glass and ceramics, making these specific blue-green pieces highly valuable on the secondary market today.
Made in Johannesburg, South Africa, Circa 1960s, making this pair 60+ years old.
Approximate Dimensions: Diameter 10cm and 10.5cm, Height 4cm.
Condition: Very good structural condition. Both heavy stoneware bodies maintain complete structural integrity, remaining solid, stable, and perfectly level. Visible Flaws: Honest, age-appropriate inspection reveals a single, tiny 3mm manufacturing glaze-pop/fleabite on the top rolled edge of the signed vessel from the original 1960s kiln run where an air bubble escaped during vitrification. The unglazed terracotta base rings display typical gentle shelf-wear rub marks from decades of genuine household use. The glossy glaze surfaces remain remarkably vibrant, completely free from modern post-production chips, rim fractures, or cracks. Factory Surface Variance: Natural variations in the thickness and run rate of the copper-teal glaze are present between the two vessels, highlighting the authentic hand-dipped nature of mid-century studio craft.
