Toe Anette van Zyl as lugwaardin saam met kaptein Paul Roux op 'n oorsese vlug vertrek het, het 'n bewonderaar haar 'n duur bottel Franse parfuum op die lughawe Jan Smuts gegee. Dit was baie romanties, maar min het sy geweet watter rol daardie botteltjie parfuum in die daaropvolgende weke in haar lewe sou speel.

Dit het spoedig vir haar 'n nagmerrie geword waaraan sy nie kon ontkom nie, en sy kon die dinge wat gebeur het, nie begryp nie. Kaptein Roux was verlief op haar, maar hy het iets gedoen wat in haar oë onvergeeflik was, en sy wou niks meer met hom te doen hê behalwe as
lugwaardin nie. Sy kon dus nie op sy breë skouer huil oor die verskriklike dinge wat gebeur het nie . . .
