The author was Press Attaché at the British Embassy in Moscow and Kuibishev for the greater part of the War years (Second World War). He was in charge of all British war-time publicity in the Soviet Union. This book by Lawrence is not a political book, but seeks to tell how the ordinary Russian lives.
