Life of Pi by Yann Martel is a philosophical adventure novel that follows the extraordinary journey of Piscine Molitor Patel, known as Pi, a young Indian boy with a deep love for spirituality and zoology. After his family decides to emigrate from India to Canada, they board a Japanese cargo ship along with the animals from their family zoo. When the ship sinks in the Pacific Ocean, Pi finds himself stranded on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, as well as a zebra, a hyena, and an orangutan. Over time, only Pi and Richard Parker remain. Pi survives for 227 days at sea, relying on his ingenuity, faith, and the complex relationship he forms with the tiger. The novel explores themes of survival, belief, and the nature of truth, culminating in a dual narrative where Pi offers two versions of his storyone with animals and one with humansleaving the reader to choose which to believe. The study notes approved by CAPS highlight Pis resilience, the symbolic significance of the lifeboat and its contents, and the tension between reason and faith. They emphasize how Pis storytelling becomes a means of coping with trauma and preserving hope, and how the novel challenges readers to consider the role of narrative in shaping reality.
