MEMORIAL ISSUE : Illustrated London News : Life of The Duke of Wellington. (Supplement) 18th Sept 1852, two issues together bound as an attractive textured black hardcover book, original, with bookplate, gilt lettering to front board, 143 pages, large, folio ( 28.2 cms x 40.3 cms) , condition: very good.
The Duke of Wellington passed on 14 September 1852, these issues published 4 days later.
Wellington died at Walmer Castle in Kent, his residence as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. He was found to be unwell on that morning and was helped from his campaign bed, which he had used throughout his military career, and seated in his chair where he died. His death was recorded as being due to the after-effects of a stroke culminating in a series of seizures. He was aged 83 and was given a state funeral one of a small number of British subjects to be so honoured, others include Lord Nelson and Sir Winston Churchill.
