During a trip to Thailand, she was confronted by the disconnect between the promotion of the sex trade and the lived realities of the women involved. Lisa Brices print Woman is razor-sharp, literally, as it depicts an exploited sex worker like the ones she saw in Thailand.  Appalled by one Thai bar sign that read pussy pulls razor blades, Brice creates this shudder-inducing image.

Lisa Brice is a highly regarded South African artist known for her distinctive paintings that explore themes of gender, identity, and the female experience. Born in Cape Town in 1968, she later moved to London, where she currently resides and continues to create powerful artworks.

Brice's work often centers around the female form, capturing moments of vulnerability, strength, and self-reflection. Her paintings combine elements of figuration and abstraction, with bold brushstrokes and a rich color palette that create a sense of energy and movement. Through her art, Brice challenges societal norms and questions traditional representations of women, inviting viewers to engage with and reconsider established narratives.

Lisa Brice has exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions worldwide. Her paintings have gained significant critical acclaim and have been acquired by prestigious collections, indicating her increasing influence and the growing appreciation for her artistic vision.

Lisa Brice was born in 1968 in Cape Town, South Africa and studied printmaking at Michaelis School of Fine Arts in Cape Town, from which she graduated in 1990. Today, she lives between London and Trinidad. She typically works with two-dimensional images, drawing upon a variety of media sources including photographs of herself and friends. Her subject matter is deeply personal and often addresses the difficulties and harsh realities surrounding sex, sexuality and violence.
