This is a sequel to Little House in the Big Woods. Pa, Ma and the children are preparing to pack up and go west, across the Mississippi and the Missouri, to set up a new home on the wide, empty prairie where Indians lurk and wolves howl, and fires are known to sweep over vast tracts.
The loneliness and the peril of the life are clearly conveyed, yet there is always a sense of security in that busy, happy family. There are no make believe adventures in the book, they really took place, and whilst the grip of the story often rests on small happenings, there are bigger events too, as when an Indian stalks silently in upon mother at her baking. Will he be friendly or hostile? Father has to go to town-a four days' drive-leaving mother and the children behind. There is only Jack the dog to guard them and Jack seems worried by something... But father returns safely, and then there is Christmas, and singing round the camp fire.
This is a longer book than the first one, but inspired by the same memories, and recapturing the same robust feeling of fact and reality.
