Hermien Dommisse was a well-known Afrikaans actress, director, writer and champion of South African theatre. At the time, she was also involved with the Transvaal Council for the Performing Arts (TRUK).

Hermien Anna Dommisse was born on 27 October 1915 in Ermelo and she matriculated at Pretoria Girls High School. Already at school, she directs a school performance and plays in the Hanekom theater company during holidays.

She obtained a BA degree and a Higher Education Diploma at the University of Pretoria. After a short career as a teacher at Helpmekaar High School in Johannesburg, she obtained a doctorate in Drama at the University of Pretoria.

Since the early 1940s, she regularly takes part in radio dramas for the SAUC, where she meets André Huguenot. He invites her to play a leading role in Helshoogte, the Afrikaans adaptation of Wuthering Heights, and thus begins her career as a professional actress.
