By haar het sy n digbundel van Rilke en twee pakkies briewe. Die huwelik met Christiaan verteenwoordig n keerpunt in Utte se lewe, nie net omdat sy Duitsland en die oorblywende lede van haar familie daar agterlaat nie, maar ook omdat dit die einde beteken van haar soektog na haar geliefde Felix, n dokter wat sy hartstogtelik lief gekry het tydens die oorlog terwyl sy as verpleegster op die slagveld gewerk het. Weens die soort omstandighede wat deur oorlog teweeg gebring word, is Utte sonder waarskuwing wreed van Felix geskei.
