Luffa cylindrica
Loofah is native to Southeast Asia. Very fast growing climber. An important edible and medicinal plant that belong to the gourd family.
Growing loofah, also known as Luffa or sponge gourd, can be a unique and rewarding gardening experience. Loofahs are often used for scrubbing and exfoliating in the bathroom, but they start as a plant that produces elongated fruits.
Loofah plants are vigorous climbers, so provide them with a trellis, fence, or other support structure to encourage vertical growth. This will also keep the fruits off the ground, preventing rot.
Harvest the loofahs when they are fully mature but still green and tender. You can let some of them mature further on the vine for seeds to plant next year. Mature loofahs turn yellow and develop a hard shell, which can be removed to reveal the fibrous interior.
Once harvested, remove the skin and seeds from the loofahs. Rinse the fibrous interior thoroughly and let it dry in a well-ventilated area. Once dry, the loofahs can be stored for later use.
With proper care and attention to their requirements, you can enjoy harvesting and using your very own homegrown loofahs.
