Common Name(s): Peyote, Sacred Cactus
Origin: Native to the Chihuahuan Desert (Mexico and Texas).

Description:
A rare gem for cactus collectors, Peyote is a small, spineless cactus prized for its slow-growing, button-like form and striking blue-green stems. Its smooth, flattened globes are dotted with tufts of white hairs, resembling a living stone. In spring, mature plants bloom with delicate pink or white flowers, adding fleeting beauty to its sculptural shape. Revered for its unique appearance and cultural history, this plant is cultivated ethically by enthusiasts for ornamental and conservation purposes.

Care:

  •  Light: Bright, indirect light or filtered sun (avoid harsh midday rays).
  • 💧 Water: Extremely drought-tolerant  Water only when soil is bone-dry.
  • 🌱 Soil: Gritty, mineral-rich mix (90% inorganic material like pumice or limestone).
  • 🌡 Temp: Keep above 10°C; thrives in dry, arid climates.
  •  Growth: Exceptionally slow (decades to mature).

Legal & Ethical Note (South Africa):

  • Ornamental cultivation is legal for collectors, but extracting or consuming psychoactive compounds is prohibited.
  • Peyote is a CITES-listed species. Ensure plants/seeds are sourced ethically from reputable nurseries.
  • For local guidelines, visit Bonsai Tree SA Growing Lophophora.

Pet Friendly:
Toxic to pets  Contains alkaloids harmful if ingested. Ingestion may cause vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy in cats and dogs. While skin contact with the plant's sap is less severe, it may irritate sensitive skin. Always wear gloves when handling and keep this cactus out of pets' reach.
