Then the man, pursued by ill-health, pursuing his dream of duty to his country; faithful in his marriage but losing his heart forever to Lady Hamilton. The many years a national hero, his devotion to his little daughter, Horatia, his deep concern over his dear Emma even in the drama of his death. None of the lustre of his career is lost in the telling, none of the gossipy details of his long romance, and the whole, though sometimes bogged in circumlocution, is a monumental work of re-creation.
