This two coin set is part of the "Lost Hoard" Half Pond Collection and is a highly limited numismatic release featuring an authentic 19th-century gold coin from the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR) that was discovered hidden in a Swiss bank vault.
Only 233 of these half ponde sets were released by the SA Mint worldwide, and only 5 sets containing a VF30 NGC graded half pond exist.
The History Behind the Hoard
During the final stages of the Second Anglo-Boer War (18991902), a large stash of gold was secretly removed from Pretoria as President Paul Kruger realized the war was lost. This event birthed the urban legend of the "Kruger Millions". A portion of this missing goldconsisting of 910 ZAR Ponde and Half Pondewas stored in the Netherlands during the early 20th century before being moved to Switzerland for safekeeping prior to World War II. The coins remained undisturbed in their original Z.A.R. National Bank money bag for decades until they were sold at an auction in Europe.
The purchased the entire hoard to return it to South Africa, certifying the coins through the Numismatic Guarantee Corporation (NGC).
