Robert Twigger's latest journey is in search of paradise: both in the strange underbelly of a Cairo you never knew existed, and deep in the Sahara desert in the footsteps of seasoned explorers such as Count Laszlo Alamsy (the inspiration for The English Patient). Almasy also tried to locate the lost oasis of Zezura, reportedly home to hordes of treasure, flocks of birds and a lush, verdant valley.
Twigger decides to relocate his family to avoid rip-off Britain's prices, but he discovers things aren't quite as simple as he thought. He escapes the chaos of Cairo for a Sahara, a great sand sea which, at its most hostile, can lead to nowhere but a dusty death. But it is also a wonder of desolate beauty, where in the ultra clear light of the desert you can see for miles.
Armed with plenty of water and a homemade wooden trolley, Twigger finally gets around to embarking on a desert trip like no other...
