Louis Tessier Bouquet of Carnation, Rose and Greater Nasturtium Flowers in Basket a Print after a 1775 Louis Tessier Hand Coloured Engraving
A PRINT OF A LOUIS TESSIER HAND COLOURED ENGRAVING. AFTER THE ORIGINAL LOUIS TESSIER (1719-1781) SPRING BOUQUETS CIRCA 1775. TITLED NELKE / ROSE / KAPUXINERKRESSE.
According to The J. Paul Getty Museum, Little is known about the life and career of Louis Tessier. The records of the Gobelins tapestry manufactory list him as a flower painter, and he was known for his designs in the Neoclassical style. On two occasions he updated the borders of tapestries, eliminating the Rococo ornament and focusing all attention on the central narrative.
Kapuxinerkresse is more commonly known as the Greater Nasturtium a flowering water plant of South America that produces an oil similar to watercrescent. The Greater Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) originates from Central and South America, where it has always been a traditional medicinal plant in Brazil, Chile, Peru and Bolivia. Sometimes the Greater Nasturtium (Tropaeolum) is confused with its relative, the watercress (Nasturtium).
Nelke is more commonly known as carnations. Carnation is recognized as God's Flower after the Greek name for Zeus
