This impressionist snow scene has as its misty background a distant viewof the skyline of Antwerp in Belgium.

Louisvan Engelenwas born in 17 January 1856 in Lier in Belgium, near Antwerp. Hestudied at the Royal Academy for Fine Art at Antwerp under CharlesVerlat. WithCharles Verlat he painted a 122 metre long panorama of the Battle ofWaterloo. Van Engelenbecame strongly influenced by Impressionist painters such as Manet,Monet and Renoir andhad a long professional career. His work is still exhibited in Belgian museums today ( eg. Red StarLine Museum and Vleeshuis Museum, both in Antwerp ).

Thehighest price paid for a work by this listed professional Belgianartist upto 2015 was US$121036 for his large oil entitled Zondagmiddag op Sint-Anneke in atthe Bernaerts auction house in Antwerp. It was the restored by itsSwiss buyer and put on sale at Sothebys in London for an estimateof 100 000 to 150000 pounds, where it was was bought and now forms part of a Belgiancollection. In 2020 this work went on exhibition at the VleeshuisMuseum in Antwerp andwas still being displayed there in 2022.

In1932 werd het schilderij, vanuit Luiks privébezit, geveild doorVeilinghuis De Lauwe (Antwerpen), waarna het in bezit kwam van eenGriekse zakenman en een tijdlang in Thessaloniki belandde. In zijnbezit werd het schilderij in 1952 een eerste maal gerestaureerd. In2015 werd het werk geveild bij Bernaerts waarna het in Zwitsersehanden kwam en opnieuw werd gerestaureerd. In 2019 werd het opnieuwte koop aangeboden. Vandaag behoort het schilderij tot een Belgischeparticuliere verzameling.

LouisVan Engelen werd op 17 januari 1856 geboren in Lier. Aan de AntwerpseKoninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten was hij een leerling vanCharles Verlat, met wie hij enkele reusachtige schilderijenrealiseerde, zoals een 122 meter lang panorama van de Slag bijWaterloo. Doorheen zijn lange carrière schilderde van Engelenportretten, landschappen, dierstukken, genretaferelen enstadszichten. Antwerpse museumbezoekers zijn wellicht al in aanrakinggekomen met een belangrijk schilderij van Louis Van Engelen: in hetRed Star Line Museum hangt immers een reusachtig doekmet.
