On 1st January 1956 the educational work of Lovedale and the control of its hostels passed to the care of the Department of Bantu Education, thus establishing a new era in the history of the Institution. It has been felt desirable that a new book on Lovedale, more popular in form and covering its work up to the end of 1955, should be produced, and this is attempted in the present volume. There are two sides to Lovedale's work. This is its internal growth from a small mission station to a large Christian educational centre. And there is Lovedale as an interpreter and mouthpiece of the non-European peoples of South Africa in face of the country's changing policies. Both aspects are dealt with in this book in one continuous narrative.
