This auction is only for the lovely old saw in the pictures. The rest may probably be sold at a later date.
No reserve, very reasonable starting price for such a collectible piece. This is an auction and has no Buy-it-now option.
Good hand tools have lifetimes measured in decades and this is definitely one of them. This lovely old 12" (useable blade length) tenon saw was made by Abraham Ashton & Sons Ltd in Sheffield. Blade has a few areas of rust pitting which is understandable given the fact that it's been made of carbon spring steel during the course of the previous century (please see pictures). The 11 ppi blade is straight and teeth are all present and well formed, being recently set and sharpened (for interest sake 12deg rake, 20deg fleam). The handle is in very good condition, and is fixed firmly to the blade with two brass split nuts. The wood is Beech with no woodworm. Although there is a small chip missing from the bottom horn and a tiny crack in the top one, the horns are overall in excellent condition which is in itself a rarity. Makes an excellent user tool and is a pleasure to use. A few dings to the wood and brass, probably from being stored in a tool chest with other tools. This only adds to its beauty and character. Abraham Ashton, (& Sons Ltd) Sheffield seems to have been at 17½ Meadow Street from 1888 to 1893. Then at Burnt Tree Works, 17 Meadow Street from 1895 to 1951. No “previous owner” stamps.
For collectors’ purposes the item was not “over-cleaned” and is in good original condition with the level still retaining its desirable collectible qualities that commeth with age and use. The Buyer is welcome to perform additional cleaning, should he require that.
