This auction is only for the lovely old level in the pictures. The rest may probably be sold at a later date.
No reserve, very reasonable starting price for such a collectible piece. This is an auction and has no Buy-it-now option.
There are three factors that make a good tool: good design, good materials, and good workmanship. This Buist level is in a good example of such a tool, is in great condition and is extremely rare. Measures 255mm long, stands about 20mm high and about 17mm wide. Really a handy little thing of beauty. The wood is ebony with no splits or woodworm. Totally stable even though it seems to have an old repaired crack on the one side (see photos). The vial is crystal clear, probably a replacement. Will make an excellent user tool and tested fine. A few dings to the wood and brass, probably from being stored in a tool chest with other tools. This only adds to its beauty and character. No “previous owner” stamps. The level is marked by its Edinburgh maker, Buist, a very renowned tool maker from Scotland, specializing in ornate levels and optical instruments. James Buist & Co, Edinburgh Spirit Level Makers and Optical Instrument Makers was known to have resided at the following locations: 1859 at 91 South Bridge Street; 1860-1884 at 5 Nicolson Street; 1885-1886 at 67 South Bridge Street. In 1887 the name changed to James Buist and Sons. Continues at 67 South Bridge Street from 1887 to 1900. They did continue after 1900 but I do not have any further details.
For collectors’ purposes the item was not “over-cleaned” and is in good original condition with the level still retaining its desirable collectible qualities that commeth with age and use. The Buyer is welcome to perform additional cleaning, should he require that.
Unfortunately no pick-up of items. I will combine shipments, if requested (auctions within a reasonable period), but this may cost more depending on weight.
Shipping will be R45 in South Africa. All items will be properly packed. I am not responsible for any damages by the post office that happens during transit.
Any more questions or remarks relating to the item being sold are more than welcome.
