The Dog Training School at Voortrekkerhoogte was intended to train dogs and their handlers in mine detection reconnaissance, tactical and security work. German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Retreivers, and Border Collies were trained in various roles as required. In 1979 the Dog Training School was moved to Bourke's Luck in Mpumalanga.

In 1993 both the equestrian and dog centres were almagated into one unit known as 12 SA Infantry Battalion and was situated at Potchefstroom.

Further budget cuts resulted in the equestrian capability of the SANDF being transferred to the SA Police in April 1995, 12 SAI was disbanded in April 2005.

These items would be a good addition to anyone interested in Militaria and would make a great conversation piece.
