The third gold one rand tenth ounce series was launched with it's inaugural coin being minted in 1997, which sought to pay tribute to the 30th annaversary of the world's 1st Heart Transplant in Cape Town. The issue was a sellout at 1000 coins.
The "heart" of the people of South Africa followed in the Cultural series which sought to honour each of the tribes and nationalities making up our great South Africa.
Ironically subsequent issues were characterised by low demand and thus low mintages each year. This augurs well for numismatists who seek rare and scarce coins.
In 2003 the Tsonga people were honoured with the issue of their nation's coin, but ONLY 348 of these coins were taken up.
On offer is a proof encapsulated Tsonga gold coin in it's original burgandy box with certificate number 231 (not number 251 as in sample picture).
