Commentary: It was only after a 15 year gap that the R20 note was once again issued commencing with Dr T.W. de Jongh’s 4th issue. It is characterised by a complete new issue (central Cape Dutch Gable on the front and van Riebeeck’s 3 ships and SA Coat of Arms on the reverse). The watermark reverted back to the portrait of van Riebeeck in place of the Springbok.
All R20 notes are now always English predominant and hence all subsequent sets contain, instead of the alternative dominant language change, a normal circulated note and a replacement note.
Watermark: van Riebeeck
Grade: Unc- (D/3): pristine note.
Replacement notes in this issues rare.
