THE COVER HAS A PERSONAL, HAND WRITTEN MESSAGE TO A GORDON THYS LANGE WHO WASA LIEUT. SERVING IN THE NO 5 BATTALION, QUEENS OWN, ROYAL WEST KENT REGT, C.M.F.IN 1944 ITALY. SIGNED BY K.S. BIRCH HIMSELF DATED FOR 20/10/81 AND IS NUMBERED NO. 85 IN THE SERIES, WHICH I BELEIVE WAS THE VERY FIRST TO BE PUBLISHED, EACH PICTURE MEASURES  43 CM X31 CM AND  THEY ARE IN PERFECT CONDITION. THERE IS A TRIBUTE TO THE ARTIST BY MR. R. S. LAWRENCE, PRESIDENT OF THE CHAMBER OF MINES OF SOUTH AFRICA AND A BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE ON K.S. BIRCH.``

MR. K.S.BIRCH PASSED AWAY AGED 96 AT HIS HOME IN MELROSE, JOHANNESBURG ON THE 31 stJULY, 2010. HE GRADUATED AS AN ARCHETECT FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSTRAND. AFTER 5 YEARS IN THE ARMY K.S.BIRCH JOINED THE ANGLO AMERICAN CORPORATION. THE BIRCH WATERCOLOUR SKETCHES ARE OF SPECIAL AFRICANA INTEREST.
