Offered for sale is an attractive medium sized Lucia studio pottery vase made in the 1950's in Boksburg on the East Rand of Johannesburg. Lucia was a subsidiary of BEP Boksburg East Pottery, the most prolific and popular Mid century Modern ceramic manufacturer in South Africa. This vase has a stylish understated elegance and the design seems strongly influenced by Art Deco prototypes . The vase has a broad flared neck and wide top aperture narrowing to meet a bulbous squat body. The lower part of the vase is decorated with horizontal ribbed moulding which is repeated in the middle of the vase. The glaze is a lovely mottled dark green with an iridescent sheen which i would describe as a Moss green or Sherwood green colour. The vase is in very good condition without manufacturing or glaze flaws. The definition is crisp and clean and the glaze applied with care. It appears to me the vase was glazed twice as there is a pooling or concentration of glaze on the shoulder of the vase where the neck joins the body. The glaze was probably applied by both dipping and spraying. The base has press moulded marks including the form/shape number and the studio name Lucia.
